Dendritic Sandstone are nature’s delicate paintings that resemble ferns, trees and plants. They are formed naturally by inclusions of iron oxide and manganese oxide that spread between rock layers to form branching crystalline structures called “dendrites”. When the rock is split open, it reveals the “painting.

Dendrite crystals often appear in sandstone or limestone. These porous rocks are perfect for manganese rich water to travel through, which deposits the mineral within the stone. It typically is found in shades of brown and white and has been mined worldwide.
