Serpentine is named from Latin word for serpent or snake for its mottled and scaley appearance. Most serpentines are opaque to translucent, their luster may be vitreous, greasy, or silky. Colors range from white to grey, yellow to green, and brown to black, and are often splotchy or veined. Many are intergrown with other minerals. Serpentine has many variations that mineralogists have divided into groups and varieties since the nineteenth century.

Serpentine is generally green in color, though patches or markings of white, black and yellow are not uncommon. It displays a fibrous or greasy appearance. Because of its green hue, it is has been mistaken for Jade (using names like Green Jade and New Jade); however, Serpentine is softer and less dense.

Serpentine can be found in Afghanistan, China, South Africa, Britain, Canada, Ireland, Greece, China, Russia and India. In the United Sates, it is found in California, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Avocado Jade Serpentine has been currently mined in Australia and it shows an oil-green color, and a waxy yellow to yellow-green.

Serpentine is the state stone for California.
