Jet is a mineraloid and a type of lignite, the lowest rank of coal, and is a gemstone. Itwas formed from decaying wood that undergoes extreme pressure and heat. The wood then becomes fossilized as a compact black material.

Jet is either black or dark brown, but may contain pyrite inclusions which are a brassy color.  It has a  metallic luster and takes a beautiful polish. The adjective "jet-black", meaning as dark a black as possible, derives from this material. Jet has also been found in England. Spain, France, Russia, Poland, India, Turkey, China, Germany, Cambodia and the United States. It is a soft stone.
